Edward Jenner: Man Behind the Vaccine
Edward Jenner
(May 17, 1749 – January 26, 1823) [3]
The creator of the first vaccine was Edward Jenner, an English physician of the eighteenth century. Dr. Jenner was born on May 7, 1749 in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England, the third son of six children to the clergyman of the Church of England, Stephen Jenner. At the age of five, Edward Jenner became an orphan and was consequently raised by his brother, a clergyman as well. When Dr. Jenner turned thirteen, he became an apprentice to a surgeon, displaying an interest in medicine from an early age. Eight years later he moved to London, England in order to work with a Scottish surgeon and anatomist, John Hunter (1728-1798). Dr. Hunter taught Jenner to pay attention to details and think beyond what was presented to him. In 1773, Jenner returned to his homeplace in Berkeley where he established a medical office, working as the doctor for his province. [1] [2] Putting together his knowledge in medicine and his observations, Jenner was successfully able to create the first vaccine, earning him the title of, "The Father of Immunology." Jenner's persistence led to a life-changing discovery that allowed future scientists to build upon and essentially save humanity.
