Edward Jenner's Hypothesis
During Edward Jenner's apprenticeship with George Harwicke, Jenner adapted the motivation to eradicate the menace of humanity, smallpox. Dr. Jenner heard many tales that milkmaids magically did not contract smallpox and was curious to figure out the reason. He began to observe these milkmaids and hypothesized that those infected with cowpox had immunity to smallpox for a lifetime. Edward Jenner wanted to turn the tale of the countryside into a science-supported medical practice. In May of 1796, Jenner focused on the milkmaid Sarah Nelmes who had a recent cowpox infection from Blossom, the cow who Nelmes milked. Jenner wanted to take the pus from Nelmes's cowpox blister and inject it into one who was never infected with cowpox or smallpox. [24] Soon, Dr. Jenner would test his hypothesis and reveal the truth behind the countryside tale.
